RealRides of WNY - 1958 Ford Fairlane 500

PORT PERRY, Ontario

It stopped raining just long enough to get a couple of shots of this 1958 Ford Fairlane 500 this past June. Pulled into the local Tim Hortons for a couple of reasons (a two-hour drive'll do that!), and there it was! This was the second year that the Fairlane 500 topped Ford's lineup of full-size cars. It would also be its last year at the top of the heap, as the new Thunderbird roof-inspired Galaxie was to show up just a year later.

We were in town for this year's Rambler-Rama, which was held just a mile or so from this Timmy's location.

RealRides of WNY - 1946 Dodge

DUNKIRK, N.Y.

Chrysler Corporation introduced the new, post-WWII 1946 Dodge pickup in December of 1945. Much (I'd imagine) to the chagrin of buyers, from the outside they looked pretty much like the 1941 models, which were introduced for model year 1939. A few out-of-sight improvements had been made, but it would be two more years before a restyled Dodge pickup would come to market.

This one was seen at this year's Harbor Cruise car show.

RealRides of WNY - 1962 Oldsmobile Starfire

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y.

It's seems almost as rare these days (or ever!) to see a 1962 Oldsmobile Starfire as it is to see one of yesterday's RealRides (a 1960 DeSoto). Okay, Olds produced almost 35,000 of the Starfire Holiday Coupes (and another 7,149 convertibles), compared to DeSoto's 26,081 1960 models. But still, finding a '62 Starfire is a treat. For a reference point, think "Oldsmobile version of the Pontiac Grand Prix and Buick Wildcat" — except that the Starfire could also be had as a convertible.

We saw this one at this summer's Orphan Car Show.

RealRides of WNY - 1960 DeSoto Fireflite

NEW HAMBURG, Ontario

Seeing this 1960 DeSoto Fireflite brought back a flood of memories. Not only of the car (when's the last time you saw one?), but the info sign in the front window told us the owner brought it down from Wasaga Beach (about a two-hour drive). Where's that, you say? Wasaga Beach is a town on the southern end of Georgian Bay, and is advertised as "the longest fresh water beach in the world." We visited there when I was a kid, one of the very few "out-of-the parents' comfort zone driving-wise" vacations that we ever took. Model year 1960 was of course DeSoto's penultimate offering, as they ended production of the 1961 models just before Christmas, 1960.

We saw this one a couple of weeks back at this year's Mopar Fest.

RealRides of WNY - 1967 Pontiac Firebird

BUFFALO, N.Y.

It wasn't readily apparent from the front, but from any other angle it was pretty clear that this 1967 Pontiac Firebird, which made a mid-model year debut about a half-year after Chevrolet's Camaro, was indeed heavily (very heavily) based on Chevy's new pony car entry. This convertible body style was continued through the end of the first-generation Firebirds, which ended with the introduction of what was basically the 1970-1/2 models.

We saw this one on Buffalo's West Side earlier this year.

RealRides of WNY - 1978 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce 2000 Iniezione

EAST AURORA, N.Y.

The Dutch brochure told us to "Goede reis aan het stuur van uw Alfa Romeo." (Have a good trip at the wheel of your Alfa Romeo.) And not that it would have affected the goodness of your trip, but the car in the brochure differed a bit from the 1978 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce 2000 Iniezione pictured here in the fact that the European version wasn't burdened with the 5-mph bumpers we had to deal with in this country. But, it was still the "2 pers. 2 deurs cabriolet" (two-passenger two-door convertible) with the "4 cilinder lijnmotor, 2-bovenliggende nokkennassen" (4-cylinder in-line engine, two overhead camshafts) under the hood.

We found this one at the 2021 Toy Town Car Show.

RealRides of WNY - 1962 Valiant V-200

LANCASTER, N.Y.
This 1962 Valiant V-200 was owned by Chippawa, Ontario resident Ray St. Jean back when we photographed it at the 2017 car show held at St. Mary's High School. And it was For Sale (the car, not the school).

For 1962, the Valiant was a Plymouth... and then again it wasn't. When introduced for model year 1960, Valiant was a stand-alone brand, but Chrysler added Plymouth nameplates the following year and officially made it part of the Plymouth lineup. For 1962, the Plymouth badging mysteriously disappeared, although the Valiant was included in that year's Plymouth brochure. For 1963, the badges were back to stay!

RealRides of WNY - 1967 Chevrolet Impala

ELMA, N.Y.
The 1967 Chevrolet Impala was a big part of the all-new lineup of General Motors' full-size car lineup that year. And just like the previous year, the big Chevys could be had with one of two different rooflines for the two-door hardtop models: the fastback Sport Coupe like today's RealRide, and the Custom Coupe, as seen below in the Caprice lineup.

We saw today's RealRide at this year's local Antique Automobile Club of America Car Show.

RealRides of WNY - 1941 Chrysler Royal

PERRY, N.Y.

You have to look closely to see the model badge on this 1941 Chrysler Royal. It's there just under the hood ahead of the front door. Chrysler sold a plethora of models back in 1941, including this entry-level Royal, and the Windsor, Saratoga, New Yorker, Town & Country, and Imperial — some of which which would carry them well into the 1990s.

This one was seen at a recent Super Cruise at the Charcoal Corral & Silver Lake Twin Drive-In.

RealRides of WNY - 1971 Buick Centurion

ALDEN, N.Y.

When the 1971 Buick Centurion debuted, it replaced the Wildcat in Buick's full-size lineup. Where the Wildcat seemed to depict sportiness with its bucket seats and all, the Centurion seemed to be going for a more comfortable LeSabre albeit with a bigger standard engine (455cid).

We saw this one at this year's Alden Car Show.

RealRides of WNY - 1953 Kaiser Manhattan

LEWISTON, N.Y.

If the outside styling wasn't your cup of tea, perhaps this brochure blurb might have gotten you to take a second look at the 1953 Kaiser Manhattan"America's most elegant interiors!... Featuring the World's Safest Front Seat."

We came across it earlier this year in the Town of Lewiston wearing a For Sale sign.

RealRides of WNY - 1956 Chevrolet Two-Ten

OLCOTT, N.Y.
The 1956 Chevrolet Two-Ten was Chevy's middle-range car, parked between the base One-Fifty and the Bel Air.

We saw this one at last year's Olcott Beach Car Show.

RealRides of WNY - 1961 Mercury Meteor 600

NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y.
This 1961 Mercury Meteor 600 and its long-time owner were seen at a recent cruise night at the Wurlitzer Building.  The Meteor nameplate in the U.S. came about for model year 1961 partly due to the demise of the Edsel.

RealRides of WNY - 1970 Pontiac Bonneville

BUFFALO, N.Y.
This 1970 Pontiac Bonneville was seen recently at an area used car lot.
For 1970, Pontiac stuck with their split-grille motif, which was introduced for MY 1959 (and took a year off for 1960 before they realized it was their "signature styling cue"). This year it changed from a horizontal design to a vertical, becoming more like the Grand Prix's new proboscis which debuted (with great fanfare) for MY 1969.

RealRides of WNY - 1986 Renault Alliance

NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y.
Saw this nifty 1986 Renault Alliance at the recent AMC Night held during a weekly cruise night at the Wurlitzer Building.

The Alliance was sold in some parts of the world as the Renault 9. Its sibling in North America, the Renault Encore hatchback, was marketed elsewhere as the Renault 11.

RealRides of WNY - 1961 Dodge Polara

AMHERST, N.Y.
This 1961 Dodge Polara was photographed at the recent Walter P. Chrysler Club meet which was held at the Buffalo Marriott Niagara.

The brochure told us the Polara "...was the finest of everything Dodge."

RealRides of WNY - 1964 Chevrolet Impala

FORT ERIE, Ontario
This 1964 Chevrolet Impala Sport Sedan (Chevy-speak for four-door hardtop) was the big Chevy's top non-two-door offering until the new Caprice came along a year later. We came across it parked in a driveway down by the river.
